The 2010 Tuscan "Leaning Toward Success" theme was challenging but extremely rewarding because we learned how to turn styrofoam scraps into our interpretation of an Italian village. Starting with last year's mining town, we were able to transform the old and create the new structures seen below. All good projects start with a plan . . . except ours! Tim & I work best when we impliment the "Hey, what about this?" theory. It works for us. We hope you enjoy the pics of how we spent our spare time during the end of September and the first weeks of October. If you missed the 2010 Invitational, we hope to see you next year!
Tim surveys the raw materials One man's scrap is another man's village!
2009 Invitational Hotel Just before the 2nd floor removal
Hotel 1st Floor with enlarged columns Yup, those poles were HEAVY!
Our 1st attempt at mitering foam molding We got better as we went along!
Tim shoots 1st "concrete" coat
No paint yet but starting to shape up! Soon to be "concrete" window stone arches
Painted stones now in place
Looking better everyday Wow, sod made a huge difference too!
Yes, Tim made Connie & Bob carry his sod!
Almost complete Finished building with bocci ball court in foreground ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Hotel 2nd floor after removal What about this? Adding foam scaps
You can't make a mistake if you start with no plan!
Before concrete coatings Paint & sod, getting better!
Pot & plants add a nice touch Yes, we worked in the dark on occasion
Kellogg Garden Products displayed nicely in front ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
2009 Invitational Jail & Merchantile were broken down to make three new structures seen below
Part 1 - Cut out the bars and start adding foam!
Concrete done and ready for paint Then we had to move it into the road!
Dressed up and ready to hide . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . the bathrooms! Right behind the structure
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Part 2
Piece the old merchantile building back together with a section of the jailhouse & add foam!
Cut out the arches & add detail around each
A couple of concrete coats later . . . painting and then the sod
Who do you think carried the sod? Add the landscaping
Add the bocci balls & landscape color ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Part 3
What's left of the merchantile with foam columns & crown
Painted, sodded and planted ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ One of our favorites is always the bar area . . .
2009 Inside the saloon The saloon back was the livery stable
1 year later it was a wreck! So we built foam walls . . .
Doesn't look like much, huh? Columns were added to the outside
Inside walls were added How about arches on top?
We need crown molding! Tim's arch idea was spectacular
More molding More arches
Concrete & paint including the old grapestake bar Concrete & mortar
We dug up some imported slate for the bar Yes, it started out a little on the pink side
Unbelievable transformation Still working on that darned pink!
Night before the big day! No pink here! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ What's a party without food?
2009 Invitational chuckwagon buffet
New sink, new imported slate & hopefully a wine rack
The skeleton Add a little concrete
Fits like a glove Columns for the front
Breaking it in the night before Lunch time!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ One of the most commented on was the vineyards Last year there was a sluice trough that we turned into
The vineyards!
We got some 40 year old dead vines, cut off the roots and staked them in place
It worked so well that we built a couple of areas
They looked pretty realistic when finished
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Voted the ladies favorite improvement in 2010 . . .
Connie's remodeled bathroom; and yes, she did most of the work herself! Great job!
I wouldn't dare show you the before pictures . . . even if we had them ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
